Get a step up to a career in construction
with these hands on courses

These courses in Construction involve a combination of hands on learning and theory, with an emphasis on carpentry skills. Depending on skill levels and work availability, participants are given the opportunity to work in our TRY Build project, assisting in the construction of affordable social housing using repurposed shipping containers.

Introduction to TRY Build (Pre-Accredited training)

There are no prerequisite or entry requirements for students entering this course.
This qualification develops the necessary skills to work effectively within a construction industry work environment. Participants work and learn in a hand’s on environment and experience a range of learning activities including:

-Work effectively & sustainably in the construction industry
-Plan & organise work
-Conduct workplace communication
-Read & interpret plans & specifications
-Use construction tools & equipment
-Work safely in the construction Industry
-Apply OH & S requirements, policies & procedures in the construction industry
-Undertake a basic construction project
-Carry out measurements & calculations
-Handle construction materials
-Apply basic levelling procedures

*On Wednesday an afternoon snack will be provided between 3.30 and 4.30pm, and mini bus transport to Doveton College at 4.30pm. Please arrange transport/pick up from Doveton College at 6.30pm. Students can be dropped off to Dandenong Station if required.

Later this year there will also be the opportunity to work onsite at the Dandenong Urban Garden project, on Thomas St. More information will be available once dates are confirmed.

If you are looking for a career in the building industry then this course can be a step up to a successful job pathway. Once you have successfully completed this course you’ll be able to move on to a Certificate II. Successful completion will help you step up into an Australian Apprenticeship.

This qualification develops the necessary skills to work effectively within a construction industry work environment. Participants work and learn in a hand’s on environment and experience a range of learning activities including:

-Carry out Measurements and Calculations
-Interpret and Apply basic plans and Drawings

-Construct Basic sub-floor
-Construct Basic Wall Frames
-Construct a Basic Roof Frame
-Construct Basic Framework for Concreting
-Install Basic External Cladding
-Install Basic Window and Door
-Install Interior Fixing
-Carry Out basic demolition of Timber Structures
